Dear October

Ihanuutta.

Samaa lokakuurakkautta hehkutan nyt täällä Pohjois-Suomessa, vaikka lämpötila on jo melkein nollassa. Kylmä ilma saa minut olemaan elementissäni. Rakastan juosta viileässä ilmassa, syysvärien loisteessa puiden lehtien kahistessa jalkojeni alla. Oranssia, punaista, okraa…puuluurankoja, raitista ilmaa.

Täällä pohjoisessa piipahdan tuon tuosta ulkona nauttimassa kupin kahvia.

puserotretrome and my bike

I have realized that October might be my favorite month of all. First, I enjoyed the autumn in Paris when it started to get a bit colder but still there were sunny days ahead when you could walk with your warm woolen coat unbuttoned or sit down at the terrace under the heaters to have a glass of red wine. And as for clothing: I love layers; I like to mix up different materials and put on my warmest cardigan.

The same love for the month of October I’m feeling now here in northern Finland where the temperature is near zero. Oddly, the cold weather activates and fascinates me. I love to go running when it is cold. It is almost meditative when I look all the beautiful colors of autumn and those skeleton trees while running. And then there is a little sunshine nearly every day that makes the nature looks like a painting.

I also like the contrast between warm and cold. For example, here in the north my morning and evening routine is to go outside with a cup of coffee or tea in my hands. I put my woolen maxi coat on a top of my nightwear and sit down on the terrace. In the mornings I look at birds and squirrels who are wandering from one tree to another. I enjoy this moment, when it is silent, cold and at the same time I feel warm. Then I am ready to either start or finish of my day.

Again, I have to emphasize again those ingredients of an easy life that I am experiencing here in the north, like going to the local café and the library with my mum and my daughter, those long walks with my family in the nature and visits to the second hand markets (the purple coat is the latest bargain). The daily routine includes making lunch and dinner for my favorite gang. In the evenings we have a little knitting club with my mother. We light candles, talk, watch the news on TV and knit.

These things make me really feel at home. I have noticed this: I have started to be more present, maybe it is because the month of October.
